24th Annual Hunter Region Business Excellence Awards

The Hunter Region Business Excellence Awards have been part of the Hunter for over 20 years, one of the longest running events in the area.

The Awards have continued to grow since they first started back in 1993 as the Cessnock Kurri Kurri Small Business Awards. In 2000 the name and profile were changed to include the Maitland and Dungog business community.

In 2006 the awards name was changed to the ”Hunter Region Business Excellence Awards” reflecting the changes to the geographical areas in which the Business Hub then operated, and encompassed businesses from the whole Hunter Valley.

In the early days of the awards major emphasis was placed on the production of a Business Plan with little scope for businesses to show how good the business presented itself and customer service observations.

The format of the awards was changed in 2000 to place a greater emphasis on the business presentation and customer service, with the submission attracting 50% of the score. This saw a greater number of entries coming in from across the Hunter Region. In 2003 The Hub also introduced an award for “Business Woman of the Year “sponsored by local chapters of BPW (Business & Professional Women) to reflect the unique challenges faced by a woman in her career. 2003 also saw an Indigenous Business award included, again rewarding success among challenges.

Today the awards attract an estimated 120 nominations with over to 70 finalists being presented with certificates or trophies at the annual awards night. The awards night itself brings together around 300 Hunter Valley business people and guests to share in the success of the winners.

“Why should your business enter?” There are a number of reasons.

  • Your business and its successes are highlighted.
  • Entrants find they focus on their business and its success by completing the process of applying – “I hadn’t realised how far I had come and the successes over the years until I completed the application form” – Peter.
  • Winners discover a new-found credibility with their clients – “Since winning my category I find that clients don’t question my prices or try to beat me down. It’s as if I’m seen as a true professional” – Brett.

24th Annual Hunter Region Business Excellence Awards

The 24th annual Hunter Region Business Excellence Awards opened on Monday 1st May, closing Friday 28th July and the awards presentation evening this year, will be held at Cessnock Leagues Club on Friday 22nd September.

This is a great opportunity to reflect on your businesses and we look forward to continuing our association with you throughout the year.

Wondering if its worth it? Not easy but well worth the effort.

Here are some of the benefits of entering your business for an award.

1.       It helps you and your team feel positive. Nominating for an award gives us a chance to reflect on accomplishments and feel proud of them even if we don’t win. It’s a chance to celebrate and helps create a positive work environment. Feeling positive and happy helps us all work better, which in turn helps business do better.

2.       It’s great publicity and helps promote your business. Winning an award is something to talk about and it attracts attention. People will want to try and find out about your business simply because you are a finalist or a winner. Not only can it help attract customers, it can help to attract and retain great staff.

3.       It helps you improve your business. Completing the entry forms can be like a business health check. You can use it to assess how you’re going and think about areas where you can improve. If you involve staff with the submission it will encourage continuous improvement from them as well.

Remember that the quality of your written entry is as important as the judge’s visit.
