Offered during Small Business Month, this practical grant workshop will build confidence in identifying and applying for suitable funding opportunities. Participants will learn how to find grants that align with their organisation and project, understand guidelines and eligibility requirements, avoid common grant-writing mistakes, develop a clear and realistic budget and structure applications that clearly communicate need, outcomes, impact and value. The session will also include a Q & A with experienced grant writers so you can ask any questions about Grant Applications you may have.
About Penny Chapman
With a background in health, I developed a passion for helping others and it grounded my work in evidence-based practice and a genuine commitment to mission-driven work.
I have extensive experience in grant writing, creating compelling narratives that demonstrate measurable impact. With over a decade in higher education research operations, I've led strategic management, grant writing, and national partnerships that secured millions in funding.
My community sector experience allows me to turn ideas into actionable outcomes, ensuring applications are fundable and deliver real impact. I have particular experience supporting the domestic and family violence, homelessness and community services sectors, alongside broader not-for-profit and social impact programs.
My business management qualifications strengthen my capacity to support organisational growth and capacity building and allows me to bring a unique blend of practical insight, governance and vision, using this expertise to help organisations grow and achieve measurable impact.

AI is already inside most law firms, whether anyone decided that or not. The question is no longer whether to look at it. It's how to tell the difference between a tool that saves your team real hours and one that quietly puts a client file at risk.
This session is built for solicitors and practice managers who are time poor and risk aware. In one hour you'll get:
- A plain-English picture of what AI actually does well in a legal practice today, and what it does badly.
- The five-minute test for whether any AI tool is safe to use near client information.
- The traps that have already caught lawyers elsewhere, and how to stay out of them.
- A clear-eyed look at where the admin hours in a small firm really go, and where time is best spent first.
There's no charge and nothing is sold in the room. Presented by James Whitehill, founder of VerusLink, hosted by The Business Hub. Places are limited by the room, so book early.
This session is designed to satisfy the requirements of the Legal Profession Uniform Continuing Professional Development (Solicitors) Rules 2015 in the field of Practice Management and Business Skills. Solicitors self-assess their own CPD under the Rules. One hour of attendance may be claimed as 1 CPD unit. An attendance record and certificate are provided on the night for CPD records.

Hands-on sessions in the training room here in Kurri Kurri, with projectors, whiteboards and kitchen facilities, and free onsite parking for everyone attending.
On your premises
Need more targeted training for a group of your people? We can run a session at your premises, shaped around your team and what they need to learn.
Online, when you are time poor
Many workshops are available online, so you and your staff can take part without leaving the business. Bookings run through Humanitix, and every dated session is listed on our events page.
Who runs the workshops

Workshops are led by experienced business people and specialist presenters, and some run in partnership with training organisations and program partners. Topics range from starting a business through to marketing, finance and managing risk.
The Hub has a long history of running free, funded workshop series across the region, from Cessnock and Kurri Kurri out to the smaller towns, helping local businesses build the skills to not just survive but thrive.

Running your own training?
Hire the training room for your session
If you are running your own workshop or team training, hire our training room, up to 20 at tables or 40 theatre style, with projectors, whiteboards and kitchen facilities, and free parking for your attendees. Members pay reduced hire.

Do members pay less for workshops?
Yes. Reduced costs on all paid consultations, workshops, networking functions and events is one of the member benefits. If you attend regularly, the saving adds up.
Can workshops be run at my premises?
Yes. As well as our training rooms, we can run more targeted training at your premises for a group of your people, shaped around what your team needs to learn.
Are any workshops available online?
Many are. Every online workshop is listed on our workshops and events page with its Humanitix booking link, handy when you are time poor and cannot get away from the business.
Where are in-person workshops held?
Most run in our training room at the Hub, Cnr Barton & Merthyr Streets, Kurri Kurri, with disability access and free onsite parking. Some funded series run at other venues across the region.
